Artist Biography

I have always had an interest in creative pursuits. Professionally, my 50-year career in computer technology, designing, building and managing systems as well as strategic technology planning for large organizations allowed me to apply my creative abilities in many ways. Artistic pursuits took a back seat to building that career and raising my family until I completed my formal education (1977). Even then, artwork was not a primary focus until I retired in 2015.

My avocational interests while I was working full time included:

  • Painting wildlife on barn wood, drift wood and even pine boards – blending the pictures into the natural grain of the wood.
  • Carving lamps and tables from diamond willow – letting the natural grain of the wood inform the look and shape of the object.
  • Painting characters on walls and canvas – decorating children’s rooms and play areas.
  • Creating the straight-line images called “Formulart”.  Formulart allowed me to use my mathematical and technical skills to create pictures that were artistically pleasing but heavily influenced by my structured approach to creativity.  See Gallery by Style for examples of Formulart or Formulart Construct for a description of the the technique.

Since retiring, I have been learning about and experimenting with colors. Those endeavors resulted in:

  • Acrylic paintings of wildlife, landscapes and Alaskan adventures.
  • Crossover paintings that include both formulart and acrylic colors.
  • Formulart Derivative paintings such as the Landmark Center and Italian Village paintings included here.
